Blown Glass - An American Studio Art Glass Specialty

Stowe Craft Gallery features original works of blown glass from talented artists all around the country.

American Studio Art Glass Blown Glass Began in the 1960s

The studio glass movement began in 1962 with a series of workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art. In these glass blowing workshops, Harvey K. Littleton and Dominick Labino demonstrated for the first time how an artist in a small art glass studio could create blown glass works of art. Before this, glass was created only in large quantities in glass blowing factories.

Josh Simpson is one of these artists.  Simpson creates spherical paperweights, which he refers to as planets, in addition to beautiful vases and platters.

Rick Satava creates glass jellyfish sculptures that are so realistic that we are often asked if they are real jellyfish preserved in glass!

A local favorite, Simon Pearce, is also one of our treasured artist.  His clear glass pieces are a beautiful and traditional wedding gift and made here in Vermont.

Round the House vases, which are available in numerous sizes are an excellent way to display your favorite flower arrangement.

Scott Bayless is known for his lifelike flowers he imbeds in crystal clear glass perfume bottles.

Glossary of Glass Terms

Murrini: long thin glass canes which have been made by stretching molten glass like you would stretch taffy. Two or more colors of glass may be stretched together or twisted together to make colorful and interesting patterns. Once cool, the canes may be cut and used as part of the design in a blown glass art pieces.

Frit: frit is crushed glass. It is sorted by size of the glass particles and usually by color.

Powdered Glass: the finest particles of glass frit.

American Studio Art Glass: blown glass produced in small studios. Before the 1960s, glass was made in large factories. But in 1962 glass research scientist Dominick Labino successfully devised a small, inexpensive furnace in which glass could be melted and worked. For the first time, artists could afford to set up independent glass studios. This was the beginning of the American Studio Art Glass movement.

Blown Glass: any piece of glass which has a starts with an air bubble blown in its center. Molten glass is gathered on a metal pipe. The glass artist can blow or puff a small amount of air through the tube to make the glass bubble. Solid pieces of glass such as marbles or paperweights are not usually "blown glass".

Hot Glass: art glass made with molten glass but it may be solid, that is, no bubble was blown into it.

Flameworked Glass: some glass is heated by a propane torch, rather than being gathered from a furnace of molten glass. Flameworking glass is typically involves small pieces of glass which are bent and melted together while the artist manipulates the pieces in front of a flame from an oxygen/propane torch.
