2007 Vermont Kaleidoscopes Festival

Several hundred kaleidoscope curious, collectors and kids experienced the seventh annual kaleidoscope festival this year. Visitors could participate in three contests: Most Popular by Vote for: Sculptural Aesthetic and Internal Imagery and a Free Drawing for a Kaleidoscope.

Stowe Craft Gallery staff like Jessie Burrill helped visitors view the kaleidoscopes some of which are valued in the thousands of dollars. Teacher Chris Player and staffer Lara Jardullo taught basic kaleidoscope making throughout the festival. Over 25 kids and adults learned the basic principles of kaleidoscope making and went home with their own 'scopes.

Kaleidoscope artist Marc Tickle demonstrated hot glass flame working skills by making insects out of glass.  Marc is known for his creative optical effects. He just returned from the world's only international kaleidoscope convention where his piece "Brewster's Beacon" won the top award at the show.

Visitors voted for their favorite kaleidoscope artistry - When all were tallied there were ties for both Sculptural Aesthetic and Internal Imagery. The four winners were Massimo Strino, Marc Tickle, Carol Parretti and Corki Weeks. The winner of the kaleidoscope giveaway drawing was Pam Haas from Jamestown, Rhode Island. Meredeth Needham drew her name from our ballot box and Pam will be receiving a king size fireworks kaleidoscope made by David Sugich. .

The most popular, award winning kaleidoscopes varied quite a bit. One was a tall cylinder encrusted with hand set Swarovski crystals. Anther displayed a substantial and detailed lighthouse which floated in space but in fact was created entirely by a symmetry of mirrors.

Another featured bright splashes of color created by fiber optic pods.

"This year's event was one of our most successful, smooth and fun" said event host Stephen Fishman. "Several media and internet pickups helped keep the event busy, all weekend. Our staff this year included three former staff who volunteered to come and help: Ali Stockman, (now the manager at Ferro jewelers on Main Street in Stowe), Michelle Shedd and Maria Moore.

The event runs the second weekend each July- Stay tuned for July 2008 details
